Get money back on your landfill visit

You’ve got stuff to get rid of that can’t go into your rubbish or recycling bins, so you put aside some time for a landfill run. But did you know that if you sort your recoverable materials before you head out, you can get a decent chunk off the cost of your visit?

The Silverstream waste and resource recovery hub, co-located at the landfill, run by WM and beloved local legends Earthlink, want recoverable items such as whiteware, metals, e-waste, household goods, and even some hazardous materials. These items can then go on to be recycled or repaired, meaning that they’re not adding to our growing landfill.

And even better: the more of your load that’s diverted for recycling, the more of a discount you get. Got an old bike, fridge, cabling or a broken flat screen TV that you can’t sell? That’s the sort of thing that can earn you a discount voucher.

When you separate over 20kg to be recycled, you’ll get at least a 10% discount voucher. The more recyclable and reusable items you have, the higher the discount, with a cap of 50%.

“We’re working hard to reduce the amount of waste that goes into our landfill,” explains Jörn Scherzer, Hutt City Council’s Head of Climate, Waste and Resource Recovery.

“The discount voucher scheme that we’re running with WM New Zealand and Earthlink means that residents can prepare their recyclables before securing their load and heading to the landfill, knowing that they’ll be saving money and doing the environment a favour.”

Of course, if all of your waste is recoverable / recyclable, you can just head straight to Earthlink at 25 Peterkin Street, Taitā and drop it all off for free! Some exceptions apply, so give them a call on 045677111 if you have any questions.
