The green bin is for green thumbs

Got a garden? Make the most of your green waste with Hutt City Council's optional green waste bin.

It's an easy way to get rid of grass clippings, leaves and garden trimmings without trips to the tip. Plus, your green waste gets turned into compost instead of going to landfill, helping reduce emissions and giving your garden waste a new life.

Having a green waste bin can also free up space in your rubbish bin, leaving it available for materials that need to go there. If you have a 240L rubbish bin, you could even save money by switching to a smaller size.

Discover why a green waste bin could be a great addition to your household.

What goes in?

When you opt-in you’ll receive a 240L wheelie bin with a green lid. The green lid means it’s for garden waste only.

Why keep green waste out of landfill?

Green waste takes up valuable landfill space and produces methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.

Over half of the waste going to Silverstream Landfill contains organic material, including green waste.

Keeping green waste out of landfill means less waste taking up space and more useful material being turned into compost instead.

Where does it go?

Instead of going to landfill, your green waste is taken to Composting NZ, where it's turned into nutrient-rich compost.

The finished compost is then available for people to buy and use in gardens and landscaping projects across the Wellington region, helping more good things grow.

How much does it cost?

Lower Hutt’s kerbside collection service is funded through targeted rates paid by each residential property.

A new green waste bin costs $115, with an ongoing annual charge of $123 through your rates.

If you currently have a 240L rubbish bin, you could save money on your rates by switching to a smaller rubbish bin and adding a green waste bin.

Cost are based on 2026-2027 rates
*Cost savings apply from the start of the next rating year.
