Beach activities for all the whānau

Have fun while protecting the beautiful beaches of Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai / Lower Hutt!

Beach activities

If you live in Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai / Lower Hutt, chances are you enjoy our spectacular local beaches from time to time. It’s an experience that can’t be beat: lovely waters, stunning views, delicious kai to enjoy nearby, and clean sand to lounge on.

But of course, that sand isn’t always clean. Each of our beaches suffer from an increasing litter problem, mostly caused by people littering (though sometimes that Wellington wind will literally blow rubbish out of your car). Thankfully, there’s a really fun way in which you can help!

We work with the wonderful people at nationwide organisation Sustainable Coastlines to organise whānau-friendly beach cleanups here in Lower Hutt. Their aim is to reduce coastline litter by 60% before 2030 through the empowerment of local communities.

What's more, Sustainable Coastlines’ Litter Intelligence programme – the first national litter database in Aotearoa! – is a huge help in building a better understanding of NZ's litter problem. This valuable resource collects data on the amounts and kinds of litter blighting our communities, before providing both insights and solutions.
